Orn Free Taa, the Twi’lek senator of Ryloth

Posted on November 9, 2021March 2, 2025 by ljcool110

Orn Free Taa was a Twi’lek politician who served as the senator of Ryloth in the Galactic Senate during the final years of the Republic. A shrewd and opportunistic figure, he was known for his loyalty to Chancellor Palpatine, his corruption, and his self-serving political maneuvers. Throughout his tenure, he prioritized his own wealth and status over the well-being of his people, making him a controversial and divisive leader among the Twi’lek population. His role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch highlights the political struggles on Ryloth and the consequences of his allegiance to the rising Empire.

Rise to Power and Political Career

Orn Free Taa was a high-ranking Twi’lek senator who represented Ryloth in the Galactic Senate for many years before the Clone Wars. Unlike other Twi’leks who were dedicated to the freedom and prosperity of their homeworld, Taa was known for his lavish lifestyle and willingness to align himself with those in power to maintain his influence. He frequently sided with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and the pro-war factions within the Senate, believing that supporting the Republic’s military expansion would strengthen his own political position.

Role in the Clone Wars

During the Clone Wars, Ryloth became a battleground between the Republic and the Separatists, with the planet suffering greatly under enemy occupation. While Orn Free Taa officially supported the Republic, he often distanced himself from the suffering of his people, leaving the defense of Ryloth to leaders like Cham Syndulla, a Twi’lek freedom fighter and revolutionary. Syndulla viewed Taa as a corrupt politician who cared more about maintaining his own power than genuinely protecting Ryloth. Despite this, Taa remained an influential figure, working closely with Jedi such as Mace Windu to liberate Ryloth from the Separatists.

Tensions with Cham Syndulla

One of the key conflicts in Orn Free Taa’s career was his rivalry with Cham Syndulla, who represented the will of the Twi’lek people far more than the senator did. While Syndulla sought true independence for Ryloth, Taa was content with remaining under Republic rule, as it ensured his continued position of power. Their opposing ideologies created tensions even after Ryloth was freed from Separatist control, as many Twi’leks viewed Syndulla as a hero and Taa as a puppet of the Republic. This division would later play a crucial role in Ryloth’s struggle under Imperial rule.

Loyalty to the Empire

Following the rise of the Galactic Empire, Orn Free Taa seamlessly transitioned from being a Republic loyalist to an Imperial collaborator. Unlike Cham Syndulla, who opposed Imperial occupation, Taa welcomed the Empire’s presence on Ryloth, believing it would solidify his authority. He worked closely with Imperial officials such as Vice Admiral Rampart, helping to enforce the Empire’s rule on his homeworld. However, his continued prioritization of personal gain over the needs of the Twi’lek people only deepened the resentment against him.

Assassination Attempt and Downfall

Orn Free Taa’s blind loyalty to the Empire eventually led to his downfall. In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Vice Admiral Rampart orchestrated an assassination attempt on Taa, using it as a pretext to frame Cham Syndulla and his allies for treason. The Empire staged the attack to justify further military occupation of Ryloth, eliminating one of their own pawns in the process. While the show leaves his fate somewhat ambiguous, official sources indicate that he survived but was rendered politically irrelevant, allowing the Empire to take full control of Ryloth without resistance from its senator.

Legacy and Impact on Ryloth

Orn Free Taa’s legacy is one of political opportunism and betrayal. Unlike Twi’lek leaders who fought for their people’s freedom, he prioritized his own comfort and power, making him a symbol of corruption. His actions contributed to the hardships faced by Ryloth under the Empire, as his willingness to collaborate with oppressive forces only strengthened their grip on the planet. His eventual downfall marked the end of his influence, but the damage he caused lingered, forcing Twi’lek revolutionaries like Cham Syndulla to continue fighting for Ryloth’s independence.

A Cautionary Tale of Corrupt Leadership

Orn Free Taa’s story serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when a leader prioritizes personal gain over the needs of their people. His career was defined by his willingness to align with those in power, regardless of the consequences for Ryloth. While he managed to maintain his position for many years, his blind loyalty to the Empire ultimately led to his undoing. In contrast, figures like Cham Syndulla, who fought for the freedom of their people, emerged as true heroes, while Taa faded into obscurity as yet another corrupt politician discarded by the Empire he once served.
