This is one of the decisions covered in our Star Wars Zero Company Irreversible Decisions Guide, and it is the single most consequential one in the game — not because the choice is hard, but because most players do not understand what they are giving up.
Story details are kept to a minimum here. This is about structure, not plot.
Where the Cutoff Is
The point of no return arrives during the Fathom’s Grand Designs chapter, when the critical mission The Infinite Coil becomes available.
The game flags the moment. What it does not explain is how restrictive things become once you commit. For me it was Cycle 39 and Cycle 40, but I have heard some have been able to make hot to a Cycle 41. You get roughly two cycles between the mission appearing and being forced into it.
What You Lose
Once you complete the final mission:
- There is no post-game state. You cannot return to the Den, take another Operation, or run another tactical mission.
- There is no free roam. The campaign simply ends.
- Unfinished side missions stay unfinished permanently. There is no cleanup phase.
- There is no conventional New Game Plus. Progress does not carry into a fresh run. A second playthrough starts from scratch.
That last point matters more than it sounds. In games with a proper New Game Plus, leaving content undone is a deferral. Here it is a deletion.
Your Pre-Finale Checklist
Use those two cycles deliberately. Before you deploy:
Run any optional missions you actually want to see. Operator-specific side missions are tied to individual squad members and contain some of the best writing in the game. If one is sitting on your Holotable, this is your last opportunity.
Max out bonds you are close to finishing. The Bond system feeds Cross Training and passive sharing, but more importantly, your surviving roster and your relationships with them shape which conversations are available during the epilogue. Bonds you never completed are conversations you never see.
Check progress-based achievements. Anything requiring a cumulative total needs to be finished before you commit, because there is no post-credits window to grind it out.
Spend your credits and Intel. There is nothing to save for. Buy the mods, buy the utilities, upgrade the Den. Resources you carry into the finale are resources you wasted.
Get everyone out of the Medbay. Injured operators carry stacking chance-to-hit penalties, and on higher difficulties they need full cycles to recover. Going into the last mission with a wounded squad is an avoidable handicap.
Think carefully about your final squad. Squad selection before the last mission is doing more than it appears to. Some operators contribute differently depending on whether you bring them or leave them behind, and that is worth considering rather than defaulting to your favorites.
Do You Have to Rush?
No. The two-cycle window is generous enough if you have been keeping up, and the game is not hiding the cutoff from you. The problem is that “point of no return” reads like “final act begins” rather than “everything else is deleted,” and players reasonably assume they can mop up afterward.
Treat the warning as a genuine cutoff. That is the entire advice.
