This is one of the decisions covered in our Star Wars Zero Company Irreversible Decisions Guide, and it is the one most likely to catch you off guard, because it arrives inside an Operation that looks routine.
Late in the campaign, the Underworld Intel Operation offers a Modification Attachment. You choose between a permanent extra utility slot or a permanent extra weapon mod slot. Whichever you pick, the other is locked out for the rest of that playthrough. There is no way to reverse it.
Here is how to decide.
What Each Option Actually Gives You
An extra weapon mod slot means one more modification fitted to a blaster. Mods come in four categories — Barrel, Power Cells, Scope and Stabilizer — and you can normally equip only one from each category per weapon. Ranks within a family are straight upgrades rather than different effects, so the meaningful choice is always which family you fit, not which rank you can afford.
An extra utility slot means one more piece of equipment carried into battle. Utilities are consumables that refresh after every fight — grenades, bacta stims, ion weapons, thermal detonators, droid poppers, flamethrowers. They grant an ability for an Action Point cost. How many an operator can carry is normally set by their Specialization.
The Deciding Factor Is Your Astromech
If BR-1 or any other astromech is a regular part of your squad, take the utility slot. This is not close.
Astromechs cannot equip a weapon and cannot equip weapon mods at all. They have no primary fire. Utilities are the entirety of how they deal damage — mines and grenades, plus support functions like buffs and smoke. An extra weapon mod slot does literally nothing for them. An extra utility slot is a straight increase to what they can contribute in a fight.
The same logic applies more gently to any support-oriented build. If your squad leans on grenades to break up clusters, or on stims to keep a fragile sniper alive, utilities are where your value is concentrated.
When the Weapon Mod Slot Wins
Take the mod slot if your squad’s damage is concentrated in weapon output rather than in equipment.
That means builds like Sharpshooters and Gunslingers, where the entire point of the operator is a single high-value shot landing. Luco Bronc is the clearest example — his talent stacks chance-to-hit bonuses specifically to make big sniper shots reliable, and mods that improve that shot compound with it. Cly Kullervo, as a Gunslinger, gets an AP refund on kills, which means improving her per-shot damage can turn into extra actions.
If you are running four blaster-carrying operators and no astromech, the mod slot is the better pick.
One Complication Worth Noting
Trick’s DC-17M Weapon System is an exception in the game’s equipment rules — it accepts no mods at all. If Trick is a permanent fixture in your squad, that is one fewer operator benefiting from a mod slot, which nudges the decision toward utilities.
The Practical Verdict
For most players, the utility slot is the safer pick. Utilities work on every operator including astromechs, they refresh every battle so you are never rationing them across a campaign, and they give you answers to specific problems — an ion weapon against shielded droids, a grenade against a cluster, a stim to save someone from a permadeath loss.
The weapon mod slot is the stronger pick only if you have built a specific, damage-concentrated squad and you know you are going to keep running it.
Given that permadeath means losing an operator is permanent, an option that helps you keep people alive tends to be worth more than one that helps you kill slightly faster.
