Star Wars Resistance: Following Kazuda Xiono during the rise of the First Order

Star Wars Resistance is an animated series set in the years leading up to The Force Awakens. It explores the rise of the First Order and the formation of the Resistance, focusing on the experiences of new and familiar characters as galactic tensions escalate.

The story centers on Kazuda Xiono, a young and eager pilot recruited by Resistance Commander Poe Dameron. Kaz, the son of a wealthy New Republic senator, is tasked with spying on the First Order from the Colossus, a massive fueling station on the oceanic planet Castilon.

Kaz’s cover is as a mechanic under the gruff Tam Ryvora and her boss, Jarek Yeager—a former Rebellion pilot who now runs a repair shop. Kaz quickly learns that life on the Colossus is far more complex than expected, filled with pirates, racers, and schemers.

While clumsy and inexperienced at first, Kaz gradually proves his worth through his piloting skills and his dedication to his mission. He becomes friends with fellow mechanic Neeku Vozo, a cheerful and literal-minded Nikto, and Torra Doza, the ace pilot daughter of station captain Imanuel Doza.

Poe Dameron and BB-8 make recurring appearances, keeping Kaz informed and occasionally helping with missions. These connections reinforce the Resistance’s limited reach and their reliance on small, covert cells.

6The First Order looms in the background, gradually becoming more aggressive. Captain Phasma and Agent Tierny are among the antagonists who appear, showcasing the creeping menace of the First Order as it manipulates local systems and prepares for war.

7Tam Ryvora’s arc is central to the series. Initially a loyal friend to Kaz, she grows disillusioned by his secrecy and ultimately defects to the First Order, lured by promises of order and belonging—mirroring themes of manipulation seen in other Star Wars works.

Throughout the first season, Kaz uncovers the First Order’s plans to use the Colossus as a staging ground. He sends crucial intelligence back to the Resistance, underscoring the show’s role in revealing the larger stakes of the galactic conflict.

The Season 1 finale coincides with the events of The Force Awakens, with Kaz learning of the destruction of Hosnian Prime—his homeworld—by Starkiller Base. This moment personalizes the war for him and cements his commitment to the Resistance.

In Season 2, the Colossus becomes a mobile Resistance base, fleeing from First Order control. The show explores themes of survival, identity, and rebellion as the characters seek to find their place in the galaxy during a time of upheaval.

The crew travels to various planets while pursued by First Order forces, encountering new allies and foes. The series expands the Resistance’s scope, illustrating how disparate groups are united by a common enemy.

Kaz takes on a greater leadership role while grappling with the growing threat of the First Order and his personal losses. The show emphasizes that heroism often comes from ordinary people stepping up in extraordinary times.

Tam’s time within the First Order reveals the oppressive nature of the regime. Though initially convinced of their righteousness, she eventually sees through their propaganda and begins to question her loyalty.

The series subtly parallels Anakin and other fallen characters by exploring Tam’s internal conflict. Her eventual redemption highlights the Star Wars theme of hope and the possibility of change, even for those who stray.

Season 2 introduces connections to The Last Jedi, with mentions of events like the Battle of Crait and Leia Organa’s dwindling Resistance forces. The show remains grounded in the perspective of outsiders, showing how the Resistance movement resonates across the galaxy.

The Aces—elite pilots from the Colossus—become key players, reflecting the importance of non-Jedi characters in the larger conflict. Their dogfights and space battles add flair while reinforcing the stakes of resistance.

The series culminates in Tam’s return to the Colossus and a united stand against the First Order. Though the Resistance remains on the back foot, the show ends on a hopeful note, with characters committed to continuing the fight.

Star Wars Resistance enriches the sequel trilogy by offering a grassroots view of the Resistance’s formation and struggles. It also emphasizes the importance of personal loyalty, integrity, and courage in the face of tyranny.

The show weaves in elements from the broader canon, including connections to the Rebellion era (through Yeager), the politics of the New Republic (via Kaz’s background), and Resistance operatives like Poe, BB-8, and General Organa.

Ultimately, Resistance is a story of growth and resilience. By spotlighting non-Force-sensitive characters and tying into the larger galactic saga, it reinforces the idea that hope is not just for heroes—it’s for everyone willing to stand up and fight.
